Oz Snowboards

From athletes to employees, Colorado’s people make all the difference

As a third-generation Coloradan, Adam Browning has been snowboarding since the ‘80s. His company, Oz Snowboards, was born of the need for a better product.

“Making snowboards started as a hobby. I wasn’t happy with the boards on the market so I made my own,” Browning explains. “I actually taught myself on the internet watching You Tube videos—it took a whole lot of practice.”

With a carbon fiber center that makes their boards lighter and more responsive than the traditional snowboard, Oz Snowboards makes some of the best custom boards on the market, and they do it right in Wheatridge, Colo. Oz’s focus is on keeping the operation in the USA, being as environmentally friendly as possible and creating an incredible product.

Keeping the company in the US, and in Colorado specifically, allows Oz Snowboards to honor their social responsibilities, to remain environmentally friendly and to keep a close eye on quality control. One of the best things about being in Colorado? “The quality of workers is amazing here,” reports Browning. “And people just want to be a part of the industry—they move here specifically for the outdoor lifestyle.” And this, Browning thinks, makes all the difference.

But the list of highlights doesn’t stop there. Colorado also provides the perfect testing grounds just 45 short minutes from the headquarters of Oz Snowboards. Browning explains, “The proximity to being able to test products immediately is huge because we can then come back to the shop and modify the product instantly.” Not only that, but Oz has some of the world’s greatest athletes riding and testing their boards. “I’m so amazed at how many hardcore athletes live in state,” he continues.

Along with access to world-class athletes, Colorado boasts a host of like-minded companies that provide a priceless community. The folks at Oz Snowboards regularly meet-up with ski makers, craft brewers, mountain bikers, and the like to share marketing ideas, product ideas and general insight.

Bringing it full circle, Coloradans love to support local products—and it’s not just the average Joe who wants to be on Oz Snowboards. Browning and his team have done some great collaborations with local companies like Colorado Native, Chipotle, O’Dell Brewing Company and more.

So how does Browning make all of these partnerships happen? Persistence. Like a good life coach, Browning says, “Don’t give up. Stick to it. This is a tough industry to deal with, but if you continue to modify your approach and create products that people love, you’ll succeed.” He also notes that listening to the customer is key to creating a product that will actually sell—especially if you want to earn referrals.

Looking forward, Browning sees growth in Oz Snowboards’ future. Since they’re always trying to generate cutting edge products, they have a few unique boards hitting the market this year. Top-of-mind for Browning is a completely new manufacturing process that will allow Oz to ship custom snowboards within days of a customer making an order.

“But really,” Browning emphasizes, “lifestyle is why people should come here—for the love of the outdoors.”
