In Colorado, outdoor recreation is more than just a fun way to pass the time – it’s a way of life, an economic driver, a place of commonality with limitless possibility. The Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office (OREC) knows that outdoor recreation contributes to the quality of life across our state and we work to ensure that industries and communities thrive in Colorado’s great outdoors.
This kind of advocacy and collaboration doesn’t just happen, it has a distinct and powerful starting point:
OREC recognizes that the economic health of all communities in Colorado is vital to the outdoor industry. OREC works alongside Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade initiatives, such as Blueprint 2.0, to encourage rural growth and local strategic planning in the outdoor recreation industry across the state. We are deeply invested in assisting businesses gain access to capital while also fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.
Without public lands and waters, we wouldn’t have an outdoor recreation industry. That’s why OREC is partnered with the Colorado Tourism Office, Leave No Trace and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to help preserve these lands. OREC also supports the SHIFT principles that guide collaboration among outdoor recreationists, conservationists, and public land managers to guide collective, strategic conversations and actions to protect our lands, waters and wildlife.
OREC works closely with Colorado higher education institutions to provide a deeper understanding of the talent pipeline needs for the outdoor recreation industry and to ensure that all companies and organizations can find the right talent at the right time. We support programs like Colorado State University’s adventure travel tourism certificate program and Colorado Mountain College’s innovative outdoor industry certificate and degree programs. This helps OREC invest in the future of the outdoors, strengthening creative solutions to any problems that may arise.
A defined connection between the outdoors and public health and wellness is lacking, and OREC wants to better establish this link. OREC has created the first ever Health Collaborative to bring the healthcare, environmental, and business communities together to promote health through outdoor recreation. Imagine if a doctor would prescribe a hike or a bike ride. The possibilities are endless!
Outdoor recreation impacts all of us as a platform for personal growth and as a major economic driver. Follow along and join us as we continue to strengthen Colorado’s outdoor recreation industry and start a national conversation about the power of the great outdoors.
