Fire Safety Tips to Prevent Wildfires

| Blog

Wildfires in Northwestern US and the West Coast continue to blaze, affecting over 360,000 acres of land and sweeping plenty of smoke into Colorado’s skies. As officials are trying to tame these widespread flames, it is important that we all do our part to prevent forest fires and wildfires from starting in Colorado as well. Here are some ways to prevent a forest fire all year long1:

  • Don’t burn dangerous things like aerosol cans, pressurized containers, glass or aluminum cans.
  • Make sure children and pets are supervised near campfires. Never leave your campfire unattended.
  • To extinguish, pour lots of water on your campfire. Drown ALL embers, not just the red ones. Pour until hissing sound stops. Or, if you do not have water, stir dirt or sand into the embers with a shovel to bury the fire. Continue adding water, dirt or sand and stirring with a shovel until all material is cool.
  • Sparks from lawnmowers and power equipment DO start wildfires. Be careful on hot, dry days, and be sure to get your equipment checked regularly.
  • In wildland areas, spark arresters are required on all portable, gasoline-powered equipment.
  • Be sure chains and other metal parts aren’t dragging from your vehicle–they throw sparks.
  • Be careful driving through or parking on dry grass or brush. Hot exhaust pipes can start the grass on fire. You may not even notice the fire until it’s too late.
  • Always check your local fire regulations.

In addition to these methods, please respect all closures and fire restrictions, and try to use cooking sources like a propane burner instead of coal.

It is our responsibility to practice fire safety when we camp and enjoy the outdoors to prevent such incidences from occurring. Remember, as Smokey the Bear puts it, only you can prevent forest fires!
