Colorado’s rural startup fund sets a model for the nation

Rural Americans are still struggling economically, which is why the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade has taken steps to helping entrepreneurs get access to early-stage funding. In September, Governor John Hickenlooper announced a $9 million allocation to a fund that would provide early-stage investment capital and/or debt to startups in rural Colorado counties. Several states have offices or programs for rural economic development or state-backed venture funds, but the two are rarely combined, making it unique.
